IF Tales and Leyends / Cuentos y Leyendas

Mary Smith dies and, with her, a language.
The tribe female leader Mary Smith Jones, last native of Alaska that spoke the Eyak language, died this week in her bed to the 89 years of age. She had been born in 1918 in Córdova (Alaska) and lived his last years in Anchorage, was last eyak of pure blood and female leader of his declining tribe, to whom she had lead in a legal battle against the great lumber companies that destroyed ancestral forests.

This is my idea for Illustration Friday of this week, a woman who dies, a woman who kept a treasure: a language that today already is LEGEND.

A wonderful illustration about a noble subject. I had no idea she passed recently.

a beautiful illustration, it is sad for a language to disappear but I suppose it is also part of the inevitable course of history

That is such a touching illustration. There is this serenity about her pose that I best portrays the accompanying article.

The death of traditions is something that's really sad to me. Here's hoping there is something recorded for posterity for future generations.

Thank you for your comment on my last week's illo, btw. :)

A shame to see languages and traditions disappear. Your illustration is really nice, there's a feeling of kindness and wisdom about it.

The idea of this illustration is superb. It is a great tribute to this woman and for a lost precious treasure. How tragic for that culture.
* I am at awe on how you use your art in bringing up some important issues in life and society.
